The default status checks created for Github with “Create a status for each job” checked seem to default to using step name (cosmetic, variable) rather than step key (definitive, stable). How can this be changed?

No, that’s not the same thing. I’m aware you can overwrite the default; I am asking how to change the default to the keys. The step name should be entirely cosmetic; as long as it is used in automation, this is a very brittle system.
